Anniversary

Today is the first anniversary of my blog. So much has happened. I thought maybe I should buy a birthday cake with one candle but all I could think about was one thing and wish I was back a year so I could try to change what would happen next.

I draw you on the back of some paper
your eyes squinting against a sun
you'll never see again
and all I want
my friend
is to hug you close
tell you it's all right
nothing matters
except we love you
look into your eyes
to know that you know
open them
look at me
see.
But you keep them shut.

My condolences, Clare. The drawing and poem say so much.

Congratulations on the first year, Clare!

I'd be very interested to find out what you believe you've achieved through blogging this last year, as well as what the blogging has brought to you - that you did not anticipate.

You and I are on similar time scales - which I had not realised before.

But may I light a digital/virtual candle to celebrate with you? One year is good. A successful first year, as you've had, lays the foundations for more. And all the best for the coming years!

As for your poem, it is sad in its conclusion. But no one who reads this blog has their eyes shut, IMHO.

Keep the posts coming, Clare. Lots of us appreciate them!

I left a comment but it didn't seem to 'take' - so I'm thinking my two comments will probably both appear. I just wanted to say how much I've appreciated your wise, intelligent voice and wry humour in your posts.
I also wanted to convey my sadness at your loss - it's so hard to lose someone and know you no longer have the benefit of their presence in the world.
Congratulations on your year blogging - I look forward to another good year's worth ahead.

Oh thanks to all of you for such kind comments. I was all set to celebrate and then got to thinking about the year and felt the only signfiigant thing was that - but like you all say - a blog is also memorial in some ways.
