So how much weight do you think it needs to lose? I listened to a podcast from the BBC World Book Club yesterday. Barbara Kingsolver was the interviewee. She said she generally writes 200 pages, throws them away and starts again. It made me want to cry!
I think Chekhov said a similar thing (though I think he was just talking in terms of paragraphs rather than hundreds of pages) - perhaps this is another writing rule too.
