Energy Rating Petition

IMPORTANT POST

Someone called Kate has just drawn my attention to this petition to the government.

It is to urge the government to produce new legislation to properly show the energy ratings of electrical appliances. At the moment the highest efficiency rating appears to be A. This is misleading. In fact there are appliances with higher ratings possible now due to better insulation and materials, but shops are not obliged to show them. Consequently consumers are unaware of them.

It is a small thing to change but an important one, in my opinion.

I have just signed it and I hope that you do too.

If you would also spread the word via your blog that would be wonderful too.

Thank you.

I think Canada is actually pretty good on energy ratings for appliances already. Whenever we buy an appliance it is clearly labelled with the number of kilowatts it can be expected to use in a year. It's very easy to know *exactly* which is the most energy-efficient model. For instance, the dishwasher we just bought had a tag that stated "370 kWh/per year". The tag went on to say that the most efficient machine uses 194 Kw and the least efficient uses 465 kw.

Thank you so much for blogging about this.

(I'm the Kate who originally mentioned it, wife of the guy who started the petition, although it was George Monbiot who drew our attention to the problem in the first place. I don't have a blog but I do have a gmail address: griffinkate at etc.)
