Great truth in that word 'painfully' - I think of all the times I've heard writing described as like giving birth. And if its painful and hard work to get it out in the first place, editing must be akin to then having to sever a limb, or at least some fingers, from your child.

Yes, and makes criticism of it so very painful too - no matter at what stage we are, or how truly good or bad it is! Just like having a child.
